Theodoros Galigaliais
Please briefly describe the origin and characteristics of your artistic style, as well as your insights and experiences in the field of pottery.
Theodoros Galigaliais:
My artistic style on the wheel is rooted in two complementary approaches. The first is the creation of curved, voluminous Mediterranean-inspired forms, often reminiscent of traditional storage jars and vessels shapes that speak of sun, sea, and earth. The second involves intentional deformation after throwing, a more spontaneous and expressive process influenced by Japanese philosophy, especially wabi-sabi and the value of imperfection. Both styles reflect my desire to merge structure with emotion, tradition with individuality.
I have been working on the potter’s wheel for over 22 years. It is the foundation of my creative practice and remains my most beloved form of expression. Through the years, I have developed a deep familiarity with the wheel, allowing me to move fluidly between precision and intuition. Approximately 60–70% of my artistic work is finished using alternative firing methods such as Raku, Copper Matte, Naked Raku, and other techniques I have mastered over time and regularly teach and demonstrate.
In fast-paced, collaborative environments such as the Jingdezhen Workshop, I feel very comfortable. I have no difficulty working under time pressure or adjusting to collective rhythms. As long as the structure and materials are in place and the scope is clear, I actually enjoy the creative energy that comes from intense environments. Collaboration, exchange, and rapid creation are all aspects I welcome with enthusiasm.

How did you combine the core artistic concept of your works in this exhibition with the technique of throwing on the potter's wheel?
Theodoros Galigaliais:
My core artistic concept is centered around the vessel as a form of inner space. The throwing technique allows me to shape fluid, organic forms that reflect both Mediterranean tradition and personal emotion. The wheel becomes a meditative tool, guiding the rhythm of each piece and its final expression.
What new understanding of Jingdezhen's traditional ceramic culture has you gained through this Jingdezhen workshop?
I have great respect for the Jingdezhen ceramic tradition, often called the “Porcelain Capital” due to its centuries-old mastery in porcelain and high-quality ceramics. This rich cultural heritage deeply inspires me. At the same time, I embrace innovation as a vital part of keeping the ceramic art alive and evolving. I believe that balancing respect for tradition with creative exploration is essential to producing meaningful and contemporary ceramic works. I am eager to engage with this unique legacy and contribute my own perspective, blending Mediterranean forms with alternative firing techniques.
What innovative directions can be found through this Jingdezhen workshop?
As a ceramic artist living in the Western world, my teaching plan is rooted in the dialogue between Western, especially Mediterranean, forms characterized by graceful curves bathed in light and the Alternative firing techniques that originated in the Far East, evolved in America, and continue to inspire in China. This cross cultural and interdisciplinary approach shapes how I share knowledge and engage with students, blending tradition, innovation, and diverse cultural perspectives.
